About College
Dyal Singh College owes its origin to the generosity of Saradar Dyal Singh Majithia who willed his vast wealth for setting up an education trust. Born at Kashi, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia (1848-1898) had an illustrious career. He was appointed Honorary magistrate of Amritsar in 1869 and launched the newspaper ‘The Tribune’ in 1881. He was a pioneer in the field of education and was a great devotee of knowledge. A scholar of Persian, a poet, an excellent sitar player, a great orator and patron of fine arts as well as sports. Our revered patron was known for his spirit of enquiry, breadth of vision, and a fine discriminating intellect.
Dyal Singh College was first established at Lahore, then at Karnal after partition. The college started functioning in Delhi as a constituent college of the University of Delhi in 1959. Today it is a University of Delhi maintained College. The College, with a campus spread over 11 acres, has an accomplished faculty of over 200, 100 staff members and a cosmopolitan student body of over 3300, including students from Congo, Afganistan, Sudan, Jordan, Bangladesh, Tibet, Iran and Nepal. The college offers facilities and courses in Computer education, Commerce, Humanities and Sciences. Alumni of the College are well placed in public and private sector enterprises, in medicine, business, services and many of them are elected representatives of the people.
Presently, the College has the following infrastructure-
- 48 class rooms, including 07 eco friendly bamboo based classrooms
- 18 Laboratories (including computer labs)
- A seminar hall with a seating capacity of 120
- An open air amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 1000
- An auditorium with a seating capacity of 210 with state of art facilities
- A spacious canteen
- A generator for power back up
- Security Lights for sufficient visibility during night
- A 600 KVA Electric Panel
- Synthetic basket ball court
- 40 computers with internet enabled laboratory for students and faculty
- Furnished Faculty Rooms
- A prize winning lush green lawn
The college boasts of a fully functional forty computer lab and an electronics lab which aids the students in their academic endeavors.
In the present academic session, the College Auditorium has been made fully functional and a disabled friendly lift has been installed. The college now has a new synthetic basket ball court and the security lights around the college have been installed. In addition, a new state of the art computer lab to accommodate 80 computers is under renovation.
Keeping in step with the need to use more environment friendly materials, 7 bamboo classrooms have been constructed. The construction of the new Science block of 7000 sq. mts. is presently going on under the OBC expansion programme.
The college has a total collection of apprx. 90,000 books and subscribes to 54 Journals / Magazines & 18 News Papers. The library reading room and entire College Campus is Wi-fi enabled. |
