The origin of life is one of the greatest unanswered questions of humankind. When we talk about science and life then it becomes necessary to think about the origin of life. Discussions on the ‘origin of the universe, solar system and life’ should begin with the idea that we, as humans, are curious to know about our origin. Some of the questions that immediately come to mind are:

  • Where do we come from?
  • Where are we heading?
  • Are we alone in the universe?
  • Can there be alternate life forms?
  • What is life?
  • Is life an inevitable process?

The teacher could initiate a discussion in the class based on the above questions. It could also be given as a project.Activity 1.1

The debate on the origin of life is closely connected to the advancements in other fields such as the physical sciences, life science, chemical science, geology and astronomy. The idea of biological evolution put forward by Charles Darwin in the Origin of Species has led us to believe that all living beings have evolved from a common ancestor and there should have been the first living organism and a unique origin of life.
