Awarded the UGC Career award in 1995 to undertake research on the "Realities of the Indian Primary Classroom": A study of the impact of process variables such as curriculum transaction, pedagogical practices and the 'hidden' curriculum on school retention and learning. The study led to valuable insights in charting a possible trajectory for achieving the policy goal of universalisation of elementary education.
