PRESS RELEASE

The University of Delhi is organizing the Distinguished Lecture on ‘The Impact of Multilateralism on India’, by Ambassador Asoke Mukerji, former Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations on Friday, 29 March, 2019 at 2.30 pm in the Convention Hall, Viceregal Lodge, North Campus, University of Delhi. The lecture is being organized as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series under the aegis of the Delhi School of Transnational Affairs (DSTA) in collaboration with the External Publicity & Public Diplomacy (XPD) Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Professor Yogesh Tyagi, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi will preside over the lecture.

Ambassador Asoke Mukerji is an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1978 and retired from New York as India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in December 2015.

The lecture looks at various aspects of multilateralism. Multilateralism upholds the principle of international cooperation for peace, security and sustainable development. Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development is closely aligned with India’s national agenda for transforming India into a world power. However, a supportive external environment of peace and security to implement Agenda 2030 is threatened by challenges of unilateralism by the major powers. The lecture discusses how multilateralism is relevant for the transformation of India, whether India participates on an equal basis in multilateral decision-making, and how India can contribute to keep multilateralism relevant.

The lecture is expected to be attended by faculty, staff, research scholars and students of the University of Delhi.
